NDRRMC: Yolanda death toll climbs to 5,959; damage at P35.5B
The death toll from super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) continued to climb as it reached 5,959 as of Wednesday morning, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.
In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC said 27,022 people were reported injured while 1,779 are still missing in Yolanda's wake.
At least 2,581,677 families or 12,191,201 people were affected in 12,122 villages in 44 provinces, with 869,730 families or 3,980,148 people displaced.
Of those displaced, 21,657 families or 93,890 people are staying in 386 evacuation centers.
Damage to property was estimated at P35,547,986,330.67, including P18,226,835,334.29 in infrastructure and P17,321,150,996.38 in agriculture.
The NDRRMC said the increase in estimated damage to infrastructure included P1,204,364,800 in health facilities.
At least 593,785 houses were destroyed while 598,306 were damaged.
Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said some P1,068,296,255.67 in relief assistance has been provided to the affected families. — LBG, GMA News
