(Updated 4:11 p.m.) Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago on Tuesday asked the Department of Justice (DOJ) to probe Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile's alleged ties with a contractor who reportedly cornered a P5.1-billion breakwater project at the Cagayan Freeport.
In a letter to DOJ Secretary Leila de Lima, Santiago asked the agency to check if Enrile used Alice Eduardo, president of the Sta. Elena Construction firm, to corner the billion-peso project.
Santiago said the DOJ should find out Enrile's "financial relationship" with Eduardo, who is also the president of Sta. Fe Builders, a construction firm which supposedly listed the opposition leader's former chief-of-staff, Gigi Reyes, as among its officers.
"If Enrile is inexplicably linked to Eduardo, the logical question follows: Is Eduardo a front woman for Enrile’s business interests? If not, why did Enrile entrust to her a project in his home base, the Cagayan Freeport, with a budget costing the government P5.101 billion?" Santiago said in her letter.
In an interview, Enrile admitted to having met with Eduardo "socially" several times, but denied using her as conduit to corner government projects.
"They are free to check. I have not received any single centavo from her [Eduardo]," Enrile told reporters.
He declined to comment on his former chief-of-staff's connections wiht Eduardo's firm, saying it is "better to ask the people concerned."
"I do not know. I have nothing to fear, nothing to hide. Why should I fear anyone filing charges against me?" he said.
Earlier in the day, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that Eduardo has been awarded the 1,000-meter breakwater project in Sta. Ana town in Cagayan.
Santiago, Enrile's staunch critic, has earlier accused the opposition senator of involvement in smuggling activities in Cagayan. — Andreo Calonzo/KBK, GMA News
