Iglesia Ni Cristo charity walk sets world record

A charity walk organized by the Iglesia Ni Cristo on Saturday set a new world record for the most number of participants in a charity walk.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Kirstie Bennett confirmed the new record Saturday night when she said 175,000 attended the “Worldwide Walk”, radio dzBB reported early Sunday.

According to a Manila Bulletin report, Bennett told the crowd of walkers at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila, “You are officially amazing.”

The previous record of 77,500 was set during Singapore's New Paper Big Walk 2000 on May 21, 2000. Proceeds in the Singapore walk had gone to education, sports and charity organizations.

The Iglesia Ni Cristo's Worldwide Walk trudged along a portion of Roxas Boulevard, with each walker donating P250 for the Typhoon Yolanda relief effort.

Roxas Boulevard and some adjoining streets were closed off to motor traffic for much of the day, jamming alternate routes. Some Manila schools called off classes. — DVM, GMA News
