The Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) suspects that detained businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles also put millions of pesos from the alleged pork barrel scam in insurance policies under her and her children's names.

According to documents the AMLC submitted to the Manila Regional Trial Court–copies of which were obtained GMA News–Napoles has four insurance policies worth a total of $25,600 in her name.

Her daughter, Jo Christine, meanwhile has two insurance policies, one amounting to P5,150,000 and another amounting to $114,218.57.

Napoles' son, James Christopher, also has two insurance policies worth a total of P6.7 million.

Another daughter, Jeane Catherine, on the other hand, was only 18 years old when a P5.1-million insurance policy was bought in her name.

Meanwhile, 11-year-old John Christian has an insurance policy worth P5 million.

According to AMLC, the insurance policies were bought at the time that the pork barrel scam allegedly happened. All the insurance policies were also paid in full, AMLC reported.

“At the time the policy was taken, Jeane Catherine Lim Napoles was 18 years old and a level 10 student at the International Shool-Taguig City. It appears, however, that she has no legitimate source of income to justify the purchase of the policy,” the AMLC said.

Napoles' camp has maintained the insurance policies were purchased legitimately.

“That's what we believe we have done today, to prove that there is no illegal activity that they are telling or alleging in court. These are all allegations,” Napoles' lawyer Efren Gumathay said.

Around $700,000–or more than P30 million–in Napoles's bank accounts and insurance policies are subject to a Provisional Asset Preservation Order (PAPO), which has the same effect as a freeze order.

Napoles's camp is asking the court to allow her to access her dollar accounts to pay for medical costs.

"Respondent Janet Lim-Napoles is presently diagnosed of having a myoma and urgently needs a medical operation thereon," the petition said.

But the AMLC also wants the PAPO  to cover Napoles's 47 real estate properties and 16 vehicles, claiming these assets also purchased from the pork scam money, “24 Oras” reported.

“Initially, we conducted an investigation and we found probable cause (to sought for the extension of the PAPO). We enumerated kasi the actual transactions, and the premise is that yung pera for those transactions came from unlawful activities,” AMLC lawyer Julius Azcueta said. — Elizabeth Marcelo/JDS, GMA News
