De Lima: NBI to conduct own probe into Benilde student’s hazing death
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will conduct its own probe into the death of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde student Guillo Servando from a suspected hazing incident.
"Definitely we will investigate that with the view of filing charges if warranted. So we will get facts, what exactly happened and appropriate actions will be taken," Justice Secretary Leila de Lima told reporters Monday.
Servando was found unconscious inside a condominium unit in Manila on Sunday. The 18-year-old sophomore college student was confirmed dead by the funeral parlor where his body was brought.
Authorities have not yet divulged which fraternity is suspected to be behind Servando's death, although earlier reports said the student was applying to join the Alpha Kappa Rho fraternity.
De Lima said the NBI, which is the Department of Justice's investigating arm, can either launch its own parallel probe or work together with the Philippine National Police in investigating the incident.
"I am sure the NBI has motu proprio conducted an investigation on that because that's in the papers today. I also saw it when I woke up this morning. I am sure either the PNP of the NBI or both will be doing a parallel probe on that," she said.
Aside from Servando, three other students were found injured inside the condominium unit. They have been brought to the Philippine General Hospital for treatment.
The Manila Police District homicide division said Servando had bruises on his legs and back when he was found, bolstering speculation that he was a victim of hazing.
Servando's remains were brought to La Salle Green Hills in Mandaluyong City for a private wake. —KBK, GMA News
