The Philippine Army will soon replace its venerable Vietnam War-era M16 rifles with M4 carbines, 27,200 of which have already been delivered by firearms firm Remington Arms Company.

Army soldiers on the front line will soon be issued M4 carbines to replace their old M16 rifles.

The shipment, which arrived in Manila last Thursday, is the first batch of 63,000 units worth P2.4 billion that the Army bought for front-line troops.

Army spokesman Lt. Col. Noel Detoyato said the shipment was fetched by a military convoy from South Harbor and brought to Camp Aguinaldo last week.

"We can't do it in one trip because there were 27,200 of them...It was completed last Friday," Detoyato said.

The Army spokesman said the rifles will be subjected to a technical inspection before they are formally accepted and distributed to soldiers.

The M4s, which is in heavy use in the US military, will replace the standard-issue M16s, which have been in the Army inventory since the 1960s. The M16s will be refurbished and issued to reserve units.

Detoyato said Remington is expected to complete deliveries within the year.  — JDS, GMA News
