Weeks after his ratings slid in a poll on potential presidentiial candidates, Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano on Friday said he was now more interested in having a baby than seeking the presidency in 2016.
In an interview on Friday, Cayetano said he wasn't really bent on running for the highest elective post in the country.
“As I said from the start, I never said I’m bent on anything. If the doors are open (I will do it)…. Kung hindi, hindi para sa akin. I’m happy anywhere we are. In fact, ang focus naming mag-asawa ngayon is not the presidency, but to have a baby, I can tell you very honestly,” Cayetano said.
Cayetano is married to Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano. They've been married for 10 years.
The senator earlier said that he was "not discounting the possibility of [running for] a higher office."
Cayetano said he did not want to run for Vice President.
“Ang problema kasi sa Vice President, unless super close ka sa President, you cannot really implement your plans. So sabi ko nga I’d rather be a senator or maybe a mayor than a VP but mahirap magsalita ng tapos,” Cayetano told reporters.
A survey on Filipino's top choices for President conducted by Pulse Asia from September 8 to 15 showed Cayetano’s ratings decline from five percent in June to only one percent in September.
The top choices for President were Vice President Jejomar Binay and Senator Grace Poe.
Binay is now a subject of an investigation of a Senate Blue Ribbon Subcommittee, where Cayetano is an active member.
The Vice President is accused of receiving kickbacks and rigging bids during his incumbency as mayor of Makati City. Critics also alleged that he owned properties that he allegedly did not declare in his Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth.
Binay has repeatedly denied the allegations. He said senators in the subcommittee have already prejudged him. —NB, GMA News
