Phivolcs: No tsunami threat from magnitude-6.7 New Zealand quake
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Monday allayed fears of a tsunami from a magnitude-6.7 quake that jolted New Zealand.
In an advisory, Phivolcs said the quake off New Zealand occurred at about 6:33 a.m., and had a preliminary magnitude of 6.7.
"No destructive Pacific-wide threat exists based on historical and tsunami data. However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter," it said.
It added there is "no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake."
The United States Geological Survey earlier said the quake was about 178 km east-northeast of Gisborne in New Zealand. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
