It’s a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for some 1.4 million government employees, who will receive a one-time P5,000 “productivity enhancement” bonus this week.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Budget Secretary Florencio Abad said the incentive will be given to all national government employees in active service as of October 31, and have rendered at least a total or an aggregate of four months of service for the year.

Employees who have rendered less than four months will be entitled to a pro-rated bonus, Abad added.

Abad said the productivity enhancement incentive (PEI) is to “reward civil servants for their hard work and motivate them towards higher productivity.”

“We hope to motivate them [government employees] further to increase their efficiency and overall performance as we collectively continue pursuing our socio-economic development goals,” the Cabinet official said in the statement.

“The PEI will help our employees in terms of their expenses now that the holiday season is already upon us. At the same time, we also hope to remind our personnel that their contributions and commitment to the country are well acknowledged and counted upon as we continue to respond to the needs of the Filipino people,” Abad added.

The budget chief further said that the incentive, which will be on top of  government employees’ year-end bonuses, will be sourced from the Miscellaneous Personnel Benefits Fund (MPBF) under the 2014 budget.

The PEI bonus totals to around P7 billion.

The MPBF is an item in the national budget for unfilled government posts.

Local government unit (LGU) employees are also eligible to receive the bonus based on the availability of funds in their respective LGUs. —Andreo Calonzo and Patricia Denise Chiu/KG, GMA News
