The Philippine National Police (PNP) is willing to lend a hand when the suggestion of Sen. Vicente Sotto III for a third party fact-finding committee to investigate the anomalies in New Bilibid Prison (NBP) materializes.
"We welcome the efforts as long as we can get to the bottom of this," PNP spokesperson Wilben Mayor said in a phone interview Friday.
"Once ma-task kami, we will send our own representative in the investigation," he added.
Earlier, Sotto suggested a fact-finding committee to cast out the unfair treatment by Department of Justice (DOJ) on high-profile NBP inmates that live the high life while serving their time.
The senator recommended former Chief Justice Reynato Puno, ex-Caloocan City Rep. Luis "Baby" Asistio and former Sen. Panfilo Lacson as members of the committee.
Twenty convicts cried foul after convicted kidnapper Jaybee Sebastian – one of the influential inmates at the NBP was not among those transferred to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after surprise inspections by the DOJ.
On Christmas Day, some inmates at the NBP let go of prohibited items in their possession after the deadline set by Justice Secretary Leila de Lima had expired.
Among those given up by the inmates were sharp objects, drugs, flat screen TVs, DVD players, home theaters and other prohibited appliances. — Danessa O. Rivera/RSJ, GMA News
