Militant farmers on Thursday started their commemoration of the 28th anniversary of the Mendiola Massacre with a march to President Benigno Aquino III's neighborhood in Quezon City.

But police managed to prevent the farmers from getting near Aquino's house along Times Street, radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported.

A photo posted on Twitter showed the militants carrying placards calling for true agrarian reform, but blocked by a police barricade.

Other photos showed the militants' demands for the ouster of Aquino and for "just and lasting peace."

The massacre in 1987 occurred at Mendiola near Malacañang, during a violent dispersal of a march by farmers seeking agrarian reform. At least 13 farmers died during the incident.

It occurred during the presidency of Aquino's late mother Corazon.

Following Thursday's march, the militants are to hold another protest at Mendiola near Malacañan Palace later in the day. — Joel Locsin/RSJ, GMA News
