Slain SAF commando talked to his wife during Mamasapano clash

One of the PNP-Special Action Force commandos who died during the Mamasapano encounter managed to talk to his wife on his mobile phone during the firefight that killed 44 policemen and 18 Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) members.

Roselle Nacino, the widow of PO2 Nicky DC Nacino Jr., told GMA News on Tuesday that she and her husband talked on the phone while he was in the middle of the clash. She said he even asked for cellphone load.

"Mga 3 o'clock p.m., nasagot niya pa po niya yung cellphone. Sabi niya nga po sa 'kin- dun ko na po narining yung putukan- 'loadan mo 'ko, bilis'," Nacino recalled.

Their call was cut-off, but by the time she managed to call her husband back, it was too late.

"May sumagot na pong iba, sabi po wala na si Nacino," Nacino said.

She said she continued to hope that the father of her two-month-old would return home. But what she first thought of was a cruel joke turned out to be the truth.

PO2 Nacino will be buried in Aurora on Thursday.

Families of other slain PNP-SAF officers remembered the sacrifices of their loved ones before their burial, with the widow of PO2 Walner Danao giving a heart-wrenching eulogy during his wake in Baguio City.

"Bakit ikaw pa? Sa dami ng masasamang tao, bakit ikaw? Sabi mo ayaw mo akong umiyak. Pinipilit ko, pero 'di ko pa 'rin magawa," Emeliza Danao said. —Rie Takumi/NB, GMA News
