President Benigno Aquino III started the search for the new chief of the Philippine National Police when he interviewed officer-in-charge Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina and directorial staff chief Deputy General Marcelo Garbo on Monday.
Whoever the President will choose will replace another member of the Philippine Military Academy's Class of 1981, Director-General Alan Purisima. Purisima resigned in February after drawing flak for the Mamasapano mission that resulted in the death of an international terrorist but also cost the lives of 44 police commandos.
The incoming PNP chief will serve on an acting capacity until Purisima's mandatory retirement in November.
