(Updated 3:49 p.m.) President Benigno Aquino III on Tuesday expressed confidence that Filipino voters will choose someone who "treads the straight path" as his successor next year.

Speaking before traders at the Philippine Stock Exchange bell-ringing ceremony, Aquino once again hinted at supporting someone who will continue his platform of governance, summed up in his slogan "tuwid na daan (straight path).”

"I sincerely believe that, next year, Filipinos will choose wisely, and will choose someone who will likewise tread the straight path," Aquino said in a speech, as he encouraged businessmen to continue investing on Filipinos.

"Those of you who have bet on the capacity of the Filipino people are already profiting handsomely. Having seen what our countrymen can accomplish, you also know that there is no reason we cannot reach greater heights," the President said.

Although he has yet to anoint his chosen successor, Aquino has been dropping hints on how he will choose the administration's standard-bearer in the 2016 presidential race.

Last week, Aquino warned against "two-faced" politicians pretending to be his ally.  He also earlier said that he wants to relinquish his post to a friend.

Vice President Jejomar Binay, the opposition alliance's presumptive candidate, has been leading pre-election popularity polls for presidential preferences, although his lead has been declining due to corruption allegations he is facing.

Although they are close family friends, Aquino and Binay have not seen eye to eye on all issues, with the President even saying that Binay was free to leave his Cabinet at the height of the Disbursement Acceleration Program controversy.

Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, the Aquino-chaired Liberal Party's prospective standard-bearer next year, has been lagging in presidential preference polls.

Binay defeated Roxas in the vice-presidential race in 2010, prompting the latter to file an electoral protest that is still pending.

Optimism in PHL

During the same speech, the President also trumpeted economic gains under his leadership, particularly the credit rating upgrades and the country’s “prominence in the global economy."

“I am certain that no one can dispute the good news that is the doubling of the PSE index, which stands as a sound reminder of the optimism that continues to surround the Philippines,” he said.

Aquino recalled how during the start of his administration, the PSE index was only in the cusp of breaching the 4,000 level. Late last month, the PSEi broke past the 8,000 level.

“Now, looking back, I cannot help but think: how times have changed, and might I add: for the better,” the President said.

Aquino even expressed confidence that the PSEi index will continue to reach record-highs during the remaining months of his administration.

“I expect to ring the bell in celebration of the index breaching the 9,000 and 10,000 levels hopefully before I step down from office,” he said.
