UPCAT application forms available for downloading in June

UPCAT (University of the Philippines College Admission Test) application forms will be available for downloading "between the first and second week of June," the state university said via Twitter on Monday.

Examination dates were not yet announced, but the UP tweet did say the UPCAT will be administered this year.

This school year 2015-2016, the Department of Education will implement Grade 10 of the new Kindergarten to Grade 12 curriculum for last school year's students who completed Grade 9.  The new Grade 11 will come in next school year.

Some schools have pilot-implemented the senior high school component of the new curriculum in earlier school years and by March 2016, they will have graduates. UPCAT 2016 would be for high school students slated to graduate by March 2016.

"The UPCAT consists of 4 subtests: Language Proficiency (English and Filipino), Science, Math and Reading Comprehension (English and Filipino). Standardized scores on these subtests are combined with the weighted average of final grades in the first three years of high school to determine qualification into UP," the UP Office of Admissions said on its website.

The UPOA also said, "applicants are ranked based on their admission grades and then screened based on the choice of campuses. The top-ranking applicants, based on the quota and cut-off grade set by each campus, will qualify."

It is hardest to qualify for UP Diliman and UP Manila. "Entry into UP Diliman or UP Manila tends to be competitive because these campuses are chosen by more applicants. If you qualify for your first choice, you will no longer be considered for your second choice of campus. But if you do not qualify for your first choice, you are automatically considered for your second choice of campus," the UPOA also said.   — Bea Montenegro/ELR, GMA News
