"I have never ordered the killing of anybody," Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said in an interview on GMA News' State of the Nation with Jessica Soho Tuesday evening as his response to backlash from Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and others on his admitted link to the Davao Death Squad.
Duterte made the admission in an interview on television program Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa. He warned that if elected president, he will run after criminals and that Manila Bay will be the dumping ground for those who break the law.
He said the 1,000 deaths being blamed on him by the New York-based Human Rights Watch will go up to 100,000. "Diyan mo makita, tataba iyong isda sa Manila Bay. Diyan ko kayo itapon," he said.
In reaction, Secretary de Lima, a former chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights, urged the public on Monday not to idolize Duterte.
"Ano bang klaseng mga statements iyan? A public servant, one who is very popular right now like Mayor Duterte and idolized by many, and yet, makes those statements! Iyong iba sa atin, natutuwa pa, lalong ina-idolize si Mayor Duterte. But, is that right? Hindi po tama iyon," said De Lima.
Davao City peace and order
"Sabi nila diktador ako...so be it!" Duterte said as Jessica Soho pressed him to comment on his approach to criminality and governance.
Duterte also said residents and visitors in Davao City can walk the streets even in the early morning hours and be assured of their personal safety and security.
He said he told Davao police that his "standard" of public safety and security in the city is that even the police officers' own wives and children can walk out late at night and go home safe. — ELR, GMA News
