Butz Aquino, PNoy’s uncle and former senator, passes away

(Updated 9:36 p.m.) Former Sen. Agapito ‘Butz’ Aquino passed away Monday afternoon, his nephew Sen. Benigno Aquino IV has announced.

“He passed away this afternoon,” the senator said in a text message to GMA News Online.

The uncle of President Benigno Aquino III served Congress both as senator and representative of Makati City.

Butz Aquino, 76, served as a senator from 1987 to 1995. He then became the representative of the second district of Makati from 1998 to 2007.

He died a few days before the 32nd death anniversary of his brother, the late former Sen. Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., who was shot and killed upon returning from exile on August 21, 1983.

Before becoming a senator, Butz Aquino led protests against the Marcos dictatorship after his brother's assassination as the leader of the August Twenty One Movement or ATOM.

But when Ninoy Aquino died, he felt that he needed to seek justice and continue what his brother had died for.

He then helped form ATOM and the Bansang Nagkakaisa sa Diwa at Layunin (BANDILA) and organized street marches and rallies, which led to the 1986 EDSA Revolution.

As a leader of ATOM, he was among those who mobilized people to gather on EDSA in 1986 for the first People Power Revolution.

Butz Aquino was initially hesitant to enter politics saying it was a "ballgame of the rich."

'Committed public servant'

In Malacañang, presidential spokesman Sec. Edwin Lacierda paid tribute to former Senator Aquino, remembering him as a “committed public servant."

"Agapito ‘Butz' Aquino had originally chosen a quiet life as an entrepreneur, but in the face of the dictatorship’s tyranny, he became one of the frontline fighters for the restoration of our democracy,” Lacierda said in a statement.

The Palace official said Butz Aquino had "played a prominent role in the parliament of the streets that fought the dictatorship.”

Lacierda also credited the late senator for being the first public figure to call on the public to protect members of the military and the police force who broke away from the Marcos dictatorship.

Lacierda described Butz Aquino as a lawmaker "known for his optimism, his wit, and his steadfast dedication to the ideals of his brother Ninoy and sister-in-law Cory."

"We know that in this time of grief and loss for his family, the Filipino people will take his loved ones into their warm and grateful embrace,” the President’s spokesman said.

'Parliament of the streets'

In a press statement, Vice President Jejomar Binay recalled the times he and Butz Aquino staged demonstrations against Martial Law.

“This country is grateful, not just for the many years he has served our legislature, but also for his staunchness in the struggle to regain our freedoms,” House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. said in a statement.

Legacy laws

Senate President Franklin Drilon mourned the demise of Aquino, whom he described as a good friend.

“Butz had played a very important role in the Edsa revolution. He was a civic organizer. He helped formed various organizations including the August Twenty One Movement, whose members bravely fought for the restoration of our freedom,” Drilon said in a press statement.

He added as a legislator, Butz Aquino’s legacy laws have been benefiting the Filipino people, such as the Magna Carta for Small Farmers and the Cooperative Code of the Philippines.

“On behalf of the Senate, I extend our condolences to the family of Butz,” Drilon said.

Makati Rep. Mar-len Abigail Binay at the plenary session Monday, also expressed sadness at former Sen. Aquino's passing.

“Nalulungkot kami sa pagpanaw ni Senator Butz Aquino. In fact, siya ang pinalitan ko dito sa Kongreso. Nakakagulat. Though matagal na kaming hindi nagkikita, malayo ang pinagsamahan nila ng aking ama,” she said. —Amita Legaspi and Trisha Macas with a report by Xianne Arcangel/NB/JDS, GMA News
