Typhoon Ineng's death toll rises to 21; 15 still missing

(Updated 10:04 a.m.) A total of 21 people have been confirmed killed and 15 others remain missing due to Typhoon Ineng, which battered provinces in Northern Luzon with heavy rains and strong winds.
 
In an update from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Tuesday, 12 of those killed were due to landslides in Benguet, including four miners in Mangkayan.
 
Two other fatalities were confirmed in Mountain Province, two more in Zambales, and one each in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Kalinga and Abra.
 
The NDRRMC said that among the 15 missing people were 12 miners occupying shanties hit by a landslide in Barangay Taneg, Mankayan town in Benguet on Saturday.
 
The government, meanwhile, pegged the typhoon's damage to infrastructure at P421 million in Ilocos region, Cagayan Valley and Cordillera Administrative Region. Damage to agriculture in Northern Luzon was pegged at P48 million.
 
The NDRRMC also reported that a total of 23,965 families were evacuated in Ilocos region, Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Calabarzon, and Mimaropa due to the typhoon.
 
Ineng entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility in the afternoon of Tuesday last week, August 18 and exited the PAR late Sunday. —ALG, GMA News
