Palace to Iglesia ni Cristo: No govt meddling, just ensuring laws are followed
By ANDREO CALONZO, GMA News
(Updated 6:32 p.m.) The government isn't meddling with the affairs of the Iglesia ni Cristo but only making sure the countries laws are followed, Malacañang said on Friday.
Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma issued the statement as the thousands of the religious group's members continue to picket the Department of Justice compound in Manila.
"Government's duty is to ensure that the laws of the land are complied with and does not wish to interfere in the internal affairs of any legitimate organization," Coloma said.
"Government is not taking an adversarial position against the INC whose contributions to national development and demonstration of civic consciousness are duly acknowledged," he added.
Iglesia ni Cristo members have been holding a rally in front of the DOJ head office in Manila since Thursday to protest the department’s investigation into the alleged abduction and harassment of an expelled minister.
The protesters, who even attempted to block Justice Secretary Leila de Lima’s vehicle on Thursday, alleged that the DOJ was meddling with the group's internal affairs.
Coloma expressed the government's hope that the "expressions of dissent will continue to be peaceful, orderly and not in any way disruptive of normal activities of our citizenry." -NB/JST/RSJ, GMA News

Coloma further said that the DOJ “has been performing its duties in accordance with its mandate,” particularly ensuring that “no one is deprived of due process of law.”
He also pointed out that “there are mechanisms and processes under the law which are available to anyone that would seek to question the actions of the DOJ.”
