Iglesia Ni Cristo spokesman: ‘Hindi po namin hinangad na pumunta sa EDSA’
(Updated 9:05 a.m.) "Hindi po namin hinangad na pumunta sa EDSA."
This was the statement given by Iglesia Ni Cristo spokesman Edwil Zabala in an interview with radio dzBB on Monday.
Zabala added: "Kung hindi po kami ginulo, hindi kami itinulak papunta rito, sana wala ngayon ang Iglesia ni Cristo dito sa EDSA."
The Iglesia ni Cristo spokesperson told GMA News Online in a phone interview on Sunday that their actual plan was to occupy part of Padre Faura Street, in front of the Department of Justice office, in Manila.
He claimed that their members on their way to Manila received text messages, instructing them to proceed to two malls near the intersection of EDSA and Shaw Boulevard -- SM Megamall and Shangri-la.
Zabala said this was part of the "misinformation," hoping to stop the protest in Manila.
The Iglesia ni Cristo was allowed by the Mandaluyong City government to stay on EDSA until Monday morning. They occupied three areas, EDSA Shrine, in front of SM Megamall and EDSA-Shaw.
In a text message to radio dzBB's Glen Gatus, Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos said he expects the Iglesia ni Cristo members to leave EDSA at 11 a.m.
Radio dzBB reported that there were at least 12,000 members of Iglesia ni Cristo on EDSA on Monday morning.
Iglesia Ni Cristo members started gathering on EDSA on Friday afternoon, in protest against what they called Justice Secretary Leila De Lima's meddling in internal church affairs.
Church members say it is an internal matter and have been calling on the government to uphold "the separation of church and state", a Constitutional principle that bars the government from passing laws to establish a state religion or to prohibit the exercise of any religion. —KG/ALG, GMA News

"Maraming nagpunta ng EDSA nung Friday, yung nagpunta sa Shang at Megamall, they had trooped to Shaw kasi umulan, tinawagan ng mga nasa Faura na tutal andun na sila [sa Edsa], pupuntahan na lang sila so they started the march all the way to Shaw at doon, may nag-apply na ng permit to rally," Zabala explained.
