A day after she indicated on Facebook that she was being asked by some groups to run for president, Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago on Thursday posted a reminder of when she first ran for the highest post more than 20 years ago.

For #ThrowbackThursday, Santiago posted a 40-second video of her speech during the 1992 elections.

Her speech was about the politicians who allegedly tried to threaten her with protected bribery, cheating, or black propaganda.

"I shall run for president or I shall die in the attempt," Santiago said. "If the trapos cheat me in the elections, I will never concede."

The senator first hinted at seeking a higher position in 2016 on Wednesday through a photo.

I first ran for president in 1992, against politicians who had at their disposal both money and machinery. I, on the other hand, only had the will of the people behind me. #ThrowbackThursday #MiriamFight

"I'm not going to be coy. Society leaders have urged me to seek the presidency. I can rise to the occasion," the caption said.

Asked about Santiago's political plans, her media relations officer Kim Arveen Patria said, "We'll all find out by October 16."

Santiago announced she had non-metastatic Stage Four lung cancer in July 2014.

A year after, she said she might run in the 2016 polls if her cancer goes into remission.

"When I go into remission, I might announce my candidacy for president for 2016, unless God gives me another disease," she said. —Trisha Macas/NB, GMA News
