(Updated 2:30 p.m.) Prohibited items such as an improvised grenade, sharp objects and a cal.-45 pistol were found during a surprise inspection at the Maximum Security Compound of the New Bilibid Prison Tuesday.

Also found were at least 10 whiskey bottles hidden in the rain gutter, a report by Bam Alegre on Unang Balita said.

Personnel from the Bureau of Corrections led by director Ricardo Cruz and NBP Superintendent Richard Schwarzkopf conducted the raid dubbed Oplan Galugad at the four quadrants of the Maximum Security Compound.

At Quadrant 1, where high-profile inmates like convicted carnapper Raymond Dominguez are in, a laptop was confiscated.

Meanwhile, at Quadrant 3, construction materials such as gravel and steel were found. These were likewise confiscated.

About 230 BuCor officials conducted the surprise inspection Tuesday.

Cruz said they will investigate if there was connivance between inmates and some employees in the bringing in of contraband items.

He added they will also look into the possibility that some contraband items were thrown over the fence.

Cruz also said there is a plan to put CCTV cameras inside and outside the cells, as discussed with Senator Loren Legarda.

Tuesday's inspection was the fifth done under Oplan Galugad. —KG, GMA News
