The Olongapo City Regional Trial Court on Tuesday convicted US Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton of homicide in connection with the killing more than a year ago of Filipino transgender woman Jeffrey "Jennifer" Laude.

The case, however, is far from over as private prosecutors and the defense panels indicated their interest in appealing the decision.

The prosecution wants Pemberton convicted of murder, insisting contrary to the court's findings that there was cruelty and treachery when he killed Laude. The defense naturally wants Pemberton acquitted altogether.
