Honasan in favor of Libingan ng mga Bayani burial for Marcos

Vice presidential candidate Senator Gringo Honasan is in favor of former President Ferdinand Marcos being laid to rest at the Libingan ng mga Bayani if the rules allow the late strongman to have a place in the state cemetery.

Honasan, one of the military leaders of the EDSA Revolution that ousted the late former strongman 30 years ago in Ferbuary 1986, indicated that it was time to move on politically as regards Marcos.

"Ang tagal naman nakaburol niyan," Honasan said in a radio interview on Wednesday. The senator cited the need for the country move on politically.

Marcos' remains continue to lie in state in a refrigerated crypt at an Ilocos Norte shrine following his death in Hawaii in 1989.

"Procedurally, ang gagawin ko tatanungin ko ang namumuno sa Libingan ng mga Bayani kung ano ang mga requirements para mailibing ka sa Libingan ng mga Bayani hindi ko muna sasabihin ang pangalan," Honasan said.

Honasan said he would the ask if Marcos, a former president and a former member of the military, was qualified to be buried at the heroes' resting place.

"Sa katunayan ay may pagaaral na ginawa na bigyan ng full military honors si dating Pangulong Marcos pero sa Norte ililibing," Honasan said, referring to the suggestion made by Vice President Jejomar Binay early during the Aquino administration when the issue of burying Marcos again made headlines.

Aquino at that time assigned Binay, a human rights lawyer during the Marcos years, to study the matter.
