Families and friends bid their last goodbye to former Senate President Ernesto Maceda, who was laid to rest at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City on Saturday.

A 21-gun salute was given in Maceda's  honor before his body was brought to his final resting place at noon.

Maceda had a five-decade career in public service, starting out as a councilor in Manila before serving in the Cabinet of former President Ferdinand Marcos.

He then served as senator from 1971 to 1972 and from 1987 to 1998.

He was Senate President from 1996 to 1998, Senate President Pro Tempore from 1992 to 1993 and Minority Leader in 1998.

He also served as a Cabinet member, a media commentator and as Ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2001.

While in the Senate, Maceda earned the moniker "Mr. Exposé" for his revelations of irregularities in government such as the PEA-Amari scam and smuggling.

Maceda, 81, died on June 20 due to multiple organ failure. He was the second Senate leader who passed away this year after Jovito Salonga in March. —Virgil Lopez/LBG, GMA News
