President Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday spent time reading messages of support from his "bosses" and taking a final look of the Pasig River fronting Malacañang Palace, a day before he steps down from office.

GMA News' Lei Alviz said in a report on "24 Oras" that Aquino went through messages on social media thanking him for his services during his six years as president.

He also took the opportunity to see the Pasig River from his private office in the Palace, according to the Presidential Communications Operations Office.

"The President enjoys viewing the river full of migratory birds as he takes a break from everyday task as President," the caption on Aquino's photo read.

Elsewhere in the Palace, Aquino's aides and co-terminous employees were already preparing for their final exit.

"Tapos na 'yung trabaho at sana naman ay natupad ito sa isang katanggap tanggap na paraan. Syempre meron din konting kalungkutan na mahihiwalay sa mga nakatrabaho," said Communications Secretary Herminio "Sonny" Coloma Jr.

Aquino will transfer the reins of government on Thursday to President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, the first Mindanaoan to become the country's leader since independence was declared in 1898.

To drum up the historic occasion, Palace personnel displayed flags along J.P. Laurel St. while ordinary folks came up with tarpaulins greeting Duterte as the country's 16th president.

"Lahat kami proud naman sa kanya na bagong presidente na uupo ngayon," said a woman who lives near the presidential palace.
