The Commission on Human Right (CHR) on Thursday lauded President Rodrigo Duterte for his assurance of upholding the rule of law despite his strong stance against criminals.

"The Commission on Human Rights congratulates President Duterte on his inauguration to high office and wish him much success in pursuing his mandate,” CHR chairman Chito Gascon said in a statement.

“We are heartened by his affirmation to adhere to due process and the rule of law in addressing the many issues he will face during his incumbency,” he added.

In his inaugural speech at the Malacañang on Thursday, Duterte reiterated his strong commitment to end corruption and criminality especially the illegal drugs trade under his administration.

“I know that there are those who do not approve of my methods of fighting criminality, the sale and use of illegal drugs and corruption. They say that my methods are unorthodox and verge on the illegal,” Duterte said

“In this fight, I ask Congress and the Commission on Human Rights and all others who are similarly situated to allow us a level of governance that is consistent to our mandate. The fight will be relentless and it will be sustained,” Duterte added, drawing applause from the crowd.

The CHR and Duterte recently got into a word war over the newly-elected president’s pronouncements about restoring death penalty, giving the police force as well as the ordinary citizens authority to kill criminals as long as it is in the line of self defense, as well as his statement that he will give bounty to those who will kill drug lords.

But in his inaugural speech, Duterte assured that he is aware of the importance of adhering to the rule of law while performing his duties.

“As a lawyer and a former prosecutor, I know the limits of the power and authority of the President. I know what is legal and what is not. My adherence to due process and the rule of law is uncompromising,” Duterte said.

“You mind your work and I will mind mine,” he told Congress and the CHR.

In his statement, Gascon said Duterte’s assurance to uphold the rule of law is a good start in terms of preserving the human rights of every citizen.

“Such is all we hope and expect as this proceeds from the solemn oath he took today.  The Commission on Human Rights looks forward to engaging with his administration on human rights as we each must do what we must," Gascon said. —ALG, GMA NEWS
