The Department of Education apologized for posting erroneous information about class suspensions for Metro Manila for Thursday, October 20, 2016.

The agency admitted it had gotten the information from a fake account impersonating a government agency.

"In an effort to catch all announcement from different sources (government agencies, LGUs, schools, etc), a tweet from a fake account of a trusted agency was quoted," it said in a statement.

DepEd deleted the post, but not before it was cited by several outlets.

"Unfortunately, the tweet was shared and quoted before it was taken down."

DepEd also appealed to the public "to refrain from unverified or malicious #walangpasok announcements. "

"Let us also be reminded of the policy that suspension of classes due to inclement weather is the discretion of the LGUs. Please wait for their announcement of class suspension," it added. —JST, GMA News
