Killing of SAF 44 worse than EJK —victims' kin

"Mas masahol pa sa EJK ang kamatayan ng anak ko."

This was how Telly Sumbilla described the death of her son, PO3 John Lloyd Sumbilla, one of 44 Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) men who perished two years ago in an operation in Mamasapano, Maguinadanao.

In a press conference in Quezon City on Wednesday, Telly tearfully recounted the tragic death of her son.

"'Yung anak ko, binaril na nga, pinaglaruan pa ang katawan. Tinanggalan ng mata, pinutulan ng braso, tinaga pa ang likod," Telly said, comparing her son's plight to the spate of killings against drug suspects over the past few months.

The SAF men were carrying out Oplan Exodus to serve warrants against high-profile Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan and Filipino bomb maker Abdul Bassit Usman.

Telly joined relatives of the SAF 44 in a march to appeal to the Office of the Ombudsman to hold former President Benigno Aquino III, former PNP chief Alan Purisima and former SAF director Getulio Napeñas Jr. accountable for the death of their loved ones.

The Ombudsman, however, only filed graft and usurpation charges against Purisima and Napeñas. Aquino was not included.

"Nasaan po sila? Hanggang ngayon walang napapanagot. Ang nag-abandona, ang nag-utos, nasaan po sila? Hanggang ngayon pinagtatawanan lang kami," Telly said.

"Maawa naman po kayo sa amin. Dapat maparusahan ang mga nag-abandona," she added. —JST, GMA News
