The commanding officer of Philippine Military Academy Hospital on Wednesday said the plebe who died of ulcer was complaining of abdominal pains three years prior to his entrance to the academy.

"'Yung timeline na kung kelan talaga siya nagka-ulcer three years [bago] nung pumasok, nagko-complain na siya ng on and off abdominal pain although hindi siya nagpapakonsulta,” said Dr. Maria. Sheila Jardolin.

She said when they brought 4th class cadet Erwin Christian Vergara of Alcala, Cagayan, at the Baguio City Hospital, there were blood on his feces and he was already anemic and dizzy.

"N’ung [April] 25 siya na-admit pero sabi niya three days na masakit na ang tiyan niya so ilalagay natin sa April 22. Hindi niya talaga nakuha sa academy 'yun. Meron na siya n’un," she said.

Vergara arrived at PMA to start the cadetship on April 1.

Jardolin said doctors found five ulcers in the stomach and intestines of the plebe.

"Nung sinilip ‘yung tiyan niya ng scope sa BGH, kinunan ng litrato ‘yung kanyang stomach saka intestines, limang ulcer ang nakita, malaki na," she said.

She admitted that they were not able to detect the illness as the physical examination being conducted on the new recruits are "very general."

Jardolin added the PMA Hospital was just an infirmary and has no capacity to treat such illness.

"Kasi ang PMA Hospital, ano lang, infirmary, ibig sabihin maliit na hospital lang. Wala kaming blood bank," she said.

She said when Vergara was brought to BGH, he was immediately brought to the intensive care unit where he underwent blood transfusion.

"Despite seven units of blood transfusion, hindi na-control yung bleeding ulcer niya,” Jardolin said.

Vergara died on May 1 due to "hypovolemic shock secondary to upper gastrointestinal bleeding secondary to bleeding peptic ulcer disease."  —KBK, GMA News
