Duterte: I refused Ramon Ang’s offer to buy me a business jet

President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday said he refused business tycoon Ramon Ang’s offer of a business jet after he won the May 2016 elections.

At the groundbreaking of the Biyaya ng Pagbabago Housing Project in Davao City, Duterte only had praises for the president and chief operating officer of San Miguel Corporation (SMC) for his charity works and for working hard to achieve success.

He revealed that when he met Ang after he won the presidential elections, the former president of the Philippine Airlines offered to purchase a Gulfstream aircraft for Duterte’s safety.

“Ignan tamo prangka-prangka. Karong presidente, medyo delikado,’” Duterte said.

[I will be frank. Mr. Ramon Ang, don’t get mad. When I won, I take the commercial flights of PAL and Cebu Pacific. He said, ‘I think what you’re doing is risky. It was okay when you were a civilian, a mayor. But now you’re a president, it’s dangerous.]

[He offered to buy me a Gulfstream when we first met. I really turned it down. ‘Never mind, sir. I’m okay taking commercial flights. To begin with, you used to be the owner of PAL.]

Duterte then asked Ang to help the public instead.

Ana siya, ‘Sige,’” he said.

[I think it's better to just help the people. He said, 'Okay.']

Last December, Duterte revealed Ang had given him money during his campaign, even though the SMC president and COO does not appear on his official donors' list submitted to the Commission on Elections. — MDM, GMA News
