Trump's immigration policy misunderstood, says US Ambassador to PHL
The United States remains open to immigrants and that there is a misunderstanding over the policy of US President Donald Trump, according to US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim.
On an interview aired on "State of the Nation with Jessica Soho," Kim said a government policy against illegal immigrants was nothing new.
"I think that there's been some misunderstanding about the [Trump] administration's policy on illegal immigrants," Kim said.
"Every administration has made it a point to deal with illegal immigration. As far as I know, no administration has said that 'We're fine with illegal immigration,' right? That said, I think the United States remains a country that's open to immigrants, open to foreign visitors," he added.
In March, Agence France-Presse reported a research that showed there are about 11 million unauthorized immigrants in the United States.
The majority hail from China, India, the Philippines and South Korea, representing the fastest-growing segments of unauthorized immigrants in the United States since 2000, according to the Pew Research Center and the Migration Policy Institute. — Margaret Claire Layug/BAP, GMA News
