Bato backs bill requiring cops to have body cams in police ops

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa on Thursday expressed his support for the proposal requiring law enforcers to wear body cameras during police operations.

During the pre-plenary conference for proposed 2018 budget of the Department of Interior and Local Government at the House of Representatives, Dela Rosa underscored the importance of wearing such device for transparency.

"I think malaki po talaga tulong kung magkakaroon niyan dahil hindi lang for purposes of transparency, para pandepensa na rin sa aming sarili whenever we conduct police operations," Dela Rosa said.

"Para pag kami na-accuse or na-charge, meron kaming pangdepensa sa sarili namin," he added.

Dela Rosa, in fact, said some P1.8 billion is included in their proposed budget as item for the procurement of 37,540 units of body camera.

Muntinlupa Representative Ruffy Biazon has filed House Bill 2741 which seeks to require policemen to wear body cameras during their operations.

Dela Rosa thanked Biazon for thinking about the welfare of the policemen.

Biazon, for his part, welcomed Dela Rosa's interest in his proposal.

"It's good to know na you have actions taken to show you agree with the idea," he told Dela Rosa.

"Pinag-uusapan ang budget so we would like to know kung may initiative mula sa PNP. Mas magandang chance na maisakatuparan ito," he added. —NB, GMA News
