Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella on Saturday clarified that the Masjid Abu Bakr Mosque in war-torn Marawi City has not been reopened.

"Contrary to news reports, the Masjid Abu Bakr Mosque is not yet open as it is in the main battle area," Abella said.

Government troops have recently pushed back the Islamic State-linked Maute group to a smaller part of Marawi, narrowing down the battle zone to less than 10 hectares.

Abella clarified that areas where troops have complete control include the Grand Mosque, Jamiatul Philippines Al-Islamiya School, Bayabao (Bangolo) and Masiu (New) Bridges, Pacasum Square and other prominent Mosques in Barangay Marinaut.

He expressed hope that the retaking of these areas will lead to the liberation of Marawi.

"These recent successes will hopefully lead to the quick resolution of this conflict, and eventually, the total liberation of Marawi," he said. —Jessica Bartolome/ALG, GMA News
