Crime rate turns almost zilch on Pacquiao fight days - police

A Manny Pacquiao fight always seems to be a crime deterrent. Citing historical data, the national police is hoping now that the Filipino boxing champ will fight frequently so as to achieve an almost zero-crime rate for a day. During Pacquiao's fight in Las Vegas, Nevada Sunday (Manila time), Deputy Director General Reynaldo Varilla, PNP deputy chief for operations, said there was no crime committed between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. all over the Philippines. "None. And it's usually like that because we are expecting our countrymen to be glued to their TV monitors for Pacquiao's fight," Varilla told reporters in Camp Crame when asked if there were any crimes reported during the actual fight of Pacquiao against Mexican fighter Marco Antonio Barrera. "Historically, everytime Pacquiao has a fight, no crimes are committed especially in Metro Manila because the people are very engrossed," he added. At least four crimes, however, were reported outside of the actual time that Pacquiao was in the boxing ring Sunday. Varilla said there were incidents each in Bataan and Compostela Valley, and two others in Region VII, said Chief Superintendent Silverio Alarcio, chief of the PNP directorate for operations. "We're hoping that Pacquiao has a fight everyday so that no crime will be committed in our country," Varilla said in Filipino. Pacquiao won against Barrera after 12 rounds by unanimous decision of the judges. - GMANews.TV
