Carpio sends letter to JBC, formally declines all nominations to be Chief Justice
Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio has formally sent word to the Judicial and Bar Council that he was declining all nominations to the post of Chief Justice.
Carpio confirmed in a text message to GMA News that he already sent a letter to the JBC to decline the nominations for him to take over from the ousted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
In an interview after a speaking engagement in Quezon City, Carpio reiterated earlier remarks that he did not want to benefit from a ruling that he had opposed.
"I don't want to benefit from a decision to which I disagree. I just want to be consistent, nothing personal," Carpio told reporters.
On May 11, eight of 14 Supreme Court justices voted in favor of the quo warranto petition that questioned the validity of Sereno appointment as Chief Justice in 2012 because of an alleged failure to file a number of Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth.
