DA warns hotels, restos vs. giving out food waste for 'kaning-baboy'
The Department of Agriculture warns restaurants and hotels against recycling their food waste for swill feed or "kaning-baboy," adding that the agency is already coordinating with local government units and the Philippine National Police for monitoring purposes.
In an interview on GMA News’ Balitanghali on Wednesday, DA spokesperson Noel Reyes said swill feed, which could be contaminated, could help spread diseases among pigs.
“Nakikipag-ugnayan po kami local government units at sa PNP para i-monitor yung restaurants and hotels, pagsabihan po sila. Nasa batas na bawal gawing kanin-baboy ang kanilang solid waste,” he said.
According to Reyes, hotels and restaurants should have solid waste management facilities.
Agriculture Secretary William Dar said food waste from hotels and restaurants, which were collected and sold to backyard hog raisers, may have affected the health of several hogs in Rodriguez, Rizal last month.
Last Monday, the DA announced that majority of the samples from the suspected pigs in Rizal have tested positive for African swine fever (ASF) based on tests conducted in England. —Joviland Rita/LBG, GMA News
