Just how much trouble can marijuana land you in the Philippines?

As we all know, the Philippines does not take kindly to people who are even the slightest bit involved with Illegal drugs.

This includes marijuana.

While it's not exactly death penalty, with today's laws, possession of 500 grams of marijuana can land you in prison for the rest of your life.

The violator will also have to pay a fine ranging from P500,000 to P10 million.

"Depende kung gaano karami ang nahuli," Atty. Gaby Concepcion explained during a segment on GMA-7 morning show Unang Hirit.

"Kung ang nahuli sa inyo ay 500 grams at pataas, which means kalahating kilo, ay parang ganon na rin, ang penalty — life imprisonment to death din."

According to the lawyer, those in possession of more than 300 grams but less than 500 grams of marijuana can get 20 years up to life imprisonment with a fine of up to P500,000.

Meanwhile, those in possession of 300 grams of marijuana or less can still face up to 12 years in prison with a fine of up to P400,000.

But what about a person who just grows marijuana?

Atty. Conception says the defector would face pretty much the same fate.

"Ang penalty sa pagtatanim ay life imprisonment to death at ang fine, ranging from P500,000 to P10 million," she said.

The lawyer clarified: "Ito ay ang penalty para sa kahit na sinong tao na nagtatanim or nagku-culture ng marijuana."

There's been some talk recently about legalizing the drug for medicinal purposes, at the very least.

But right now, it's still a no. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
