Philippine Military Academy swimming instructors sought forgiveness from Cadet Fourth Class Mario Telan Jr.'s family after they admitted to lapses that resulted in the cadet's drowning.

According to Jun Veneracion's Tuesday report on 24 Oras, Telan's body was found at the bottom of the academy pool on November 8 following a swimming class.

Telan's mother, Edna, said the swimming instructors had spoken to her about her son's death.

"Kinausap ko sila, Sir. Humingi sila sa akin ng tawad. Inamin nila na may kasalanan sila, may pagkukulang sila," said Edna.

According to the PMA, there was no evidence of foul play in Telan's death, though there was possible negligence on the instructors' part.

Telan's death came nearly two months after fellow Fourth Class Cadet Darwain Dormitorio was allegedly hazed to death at the PMA.

Meanwhile, Malacañang expressed concern over the death of another cadet.

"We are bothered by the death of another plebe who could be an outstanding military officer if he were able to finish his course. So the military instructors should reassess their protocol so they could provide safety to their trainees," said Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo.

Telan will be laid to rest on Saturday. — Ma. Angelica Garcia/DVM, GMA News
