Cop killed in grenade blast in Misamis Oriental; suspect shot dead

A police officer was killed in a grenade explosion inside a school campus in Initao, Misamis Oriental on Thursday. The man who lobbed the grenade ended up dead as well after being shot by authorities.

Information from the Misamis Oriental Provincial Police Office identified the victim as Police Master Sergeant Jason Magno.

Another policeman, identified as Police Master Sergeant Alice Balido, and 10 students of the Initao College were injured in the blast incident.

Initial investigation showed that police received information that a man, carrying a grenade, was roaming around the campus. Authorities immediately responded to the area.

When confronted, the suspect lobbed the grenade which prompted Magno to use his body as a shield so that nobody else would get hurt.

Magno's companion, Balido, then fired at the suspect, killing him.

In an update given by the police, the suspect was identified as Ebrahim Ampaso Basher, 65, a resident of Madamba, Lanao Del Sur.

Investigation is ongoing to determine the motive. — MDM/BM, GMA News
