President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday led the assumption ceremony for the fourth commander of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) under his watch.

In his speech, PSG commander Colonel Jesus Durante III talked about the challenges in securing the President as he cited Duterte’s fight against illegal drugs, terrorism, corruption and criminality.

He also took a swipe at those who have expressed opposition to the President, seemingly conflating Duterte's critics with anyone who may wish him harm.

“Aside from these security threats, it is also to note that members of the President’s family including the President himself have been attacked by the opposition, the oligarchs and their associates taking advantage of the cyber age which facilitates online communication between those who want to do harm to our President,” he told government officials and PSG personnel at the Malacañang Park.

“These are peculiar times, marked by international issues and tough presidential pronouncements. No President has ever dared to boldly and openly stand for the love of his country,” he also declared.

Durante, who holds master’s degrees in defense analysis and public management, then instructed the PSG men and women to “leave no room for mistakes.”

“Always bear in mind that the security gadgetry we possess will only be as effective as the people that use them. Leave the critics behind,” the 49-year-old said.

Duterte, meanwhile, said he trusts that Durante would be able to continue to provide him and his family “excellent” security as well as to the visiting heads of states and diplomats.

“I look forward to working with you in the coming months,” he said.

He also commended Durante’s predecessor Brigadier General Jose Eriel Niembra for his “steady and unwavering leadership.” Niembra is set to assume the post of brigade commander of the Army's 701st Infantry Brigade under the 7th Infantry Division based in Mati, Davao Oriental.

“Lastly, let me take this opportunity to express my gratitude to every PSG trooper for their valiant efforts in the performance of their duties,” Duterte said.

“Each and every one of you has truly shown undaunted courage and unbridled patriotism by choosing to be of service to our beloved country.” — BM, GMA News
