ICP warns danger in mixing bleach and alcohol as disinfectant solution

The Integrated Chemists of the Philippines (ICP) has warned against an alarming video posted online that supposedly teaches how to make a disinfectant solution.

The video apparently instructs viewers to make a mixture that includes alcohol and bleach.

According to the ICP, this is a deadly combination, for it creates choloroform.

"Pinapaalalahanan ng ICP ang lahat na huwag tularan o gayahin ang mga kumakalat na video sa social media na nagtuturo kung paano gumawa ng disinfectant solution gamit ang bleach at alkohol. Ito ay makalilikha ng chloroform, isang kemikal na mapanganib at nakalalason kapag nalanghap o naipahid sa balat," they said in a Facebook post.

In a poster they shared, they wrote, "Huwag tularan. Nakamamatay."

"Tandaan: HUWAG BASTA-BASTANG MAGTIMPLA, DAHIL HINDI KA BIHASA," they added.

The said video popped up amid coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) fears in the country.

The Department of Health (DOH) confirmed 90 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday afternoon, bringing the total number of infections in the Philippines to 552 as health authorities ramp up testing nationwide.

The number of fatalities also rose to 35 while the total number of recoveries climbed to 20.

Meanwhile, 704 people have tested negative for the disease.
