More than P220 million will be donated by the Philippine National Police to the national government to help in extending assistance for the poor families during this period of health crisis, PNP chief Police General Archie Francisco Gamboa said on Thursday.

"As the Team PNP Bayanihan Fund Challenge culminates today, and after some accounting and auditing procedures to ensure transparency and accountability, we are now ready to turn over the full amount of P220,371,471 to the national treasury to augment government funds for social amelioration programs to feed the poorest of poor and help the needy," Gamboa said during a virtual press briefing.

Gamboa expressed gratitude to each and every PNP personnel who voluntarily contributed to the fund challenge, which initially targeted to donate P200 million to help in efforts in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I must thank each and every member of the PNP for taking part in probably the largest fund drive in PNP history," Gamboa said.

Aside from the Bayanihan Fund Challenge, the PNP also launched a program called "Kapwa Ko, Sagot Ko," where cops were encouraged to adopt an indigent family by providing them food packs or grocery items and financial assistance for at least one week.

As of April 26, the Kapwa Ko, Sagot Ko program has supported more than 141,000 poor families across the country. —Anna Felicia Bajo/LBG, GMA News
