Año sees San Juan, Valenzuela on GCQ after May 15

San Juan and Valenzuela in Metro Manila and Quezon province are expected to be placed under a general community quarantine (GCQ) once the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) ends on May 15, according to Interior Secretary Eduardo Año.

According to Joseph Morong's report on "24 Oras", COVID-19 task force vice chairman Año said the case doubling time in these areas has slowed significantly.

San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora earlier reported that COVID-19 cases in his city had already peaked.

However, the ECQ may be extended in some areas where infections continue to mount such as Quezon City, Rizal, Albay, Zamboanga City, Davao, and Cebu.

“Ang puwede diyan ang tinatawag natin na localized area. So puwede nating i-confine lang ‘yung tatlo, apat na barangay o kaya kung probinsya ‘yan, ‘yung mga municipality para naman makagalawa naman ‘yung probinsya,” Año explained.

He added that the government continues to monitor COVID-19 cases in areas under ECQ in order for them to decide where the quarantine will be modified by May 15.

“Nagshi-shift na tayo ng strategy na from lockdown to modified kasi mayroon nga tayong tumataas na [testing] capacity,” the Interior Secretary said.

“Kung ma-hit natin ‘yung kahit 20,000 [tests daily] muna by May 15, ‘di mo na kailangang mag-ECQ kasi you can unmask the virus before it can spread,” he added.

The Philippines has recorded 10,343 COVID-19 cases with 1,618 and 658 deaths as of Thursday afternoon. -NB, GMA News
