AMID CONCERNS OF POLICE OVERREACH

Eleazar says abuse by cops of social media monitoring is disallowed

Joint Task Force COVID Shield commander Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar

Amid concerns on the police's monitoring of quarantine violations through social media, Joint Task Force COVID Shield commander Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar on Wednesday assured the public that cops abuse under the measure would not be tolerated.

"We will see to it, wala kaming aabusuhin at kung mayroon mang magaabuso, mananagot sa amin," Eleazar told ANC.

Eleazar reiterated that this measure would empower ordinary citizens to report those who are in power and in position but violates quarantine measures.

"Kayo ang mabibigyan ng pagkakataon na makapag-report ng impormasyon and just like what I've said, PNP leadership will not tolerate any abuse. Iparating niyo lang po sa atin," Eleazar said.

He also said Philippine National Police chief Police General Camilo Pancratius Cascolan wants to regain the public's trust and confidence in the police force.

Earlier, Eleazar vowed that the social media "surveillance" measure would be done with utmost respect for the right to privacy

Eleazar had urged police commanders and their personnel to regularly monitor social media for violations of quarantine measures, a plan which is being supported by Interior Secretary Eduardo Año.

The police official said netizens have been posting complaints about some violations of minimum health safety standard protocols, including mass gatherings despite the pandemic.

The Palace has said there is nothing illegal with social media monitoring, especially if one's post is public. —LBG, GMA News
