JBC shortlists 7 for upcoming Supreme Court vacancy

The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has picked seven nominees to a Supreme Court post that will be vacated by Associate Justice Jose Reyes, Jr. when he retires this week.

Court of Appeals (CA) justices Ramon Cruz, Japar Dimaampao, Jhosep Lopez, Eduardo Peralta, Jr., Ricardo Rosario, and Maria Filomena Singh; and Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez made it to the shortlist the JBC submitted to President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday.

Reyes will retire on September 18 after decades in the judiciary, the last two years of which he spent in the highest Philippine court.

Duterte has 90 days from the vacancy to appoint a new justice.

All but four -- Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta, Senior Associate Justice Estela Perlas-Bernabe, and Associate Justices Marvic Leonen and Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa -- of the sitting justices are Duterte appointees.
