DepEd pitches alternatives to periodic exam to prevent ‘distance cheating’

The Department of Education (DepEd) said it will conduct summative and performance tasks instead of holding periodical examinations this school year to prevent “distance cheating.”

Aside from these tasks, Education Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio said teachers could also do occasional conversations with the students.

“It could be addressed by summative and performance tasks. The other thing that could be done is for the teachers to do occasional conversations with the learners so it does not have to be a test, it could just be a conversation focusing on the lessons covered,” San Antonio said in Mariz Umali’s report on “24 Oras” on Wednesday.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones, also clarified that these approaches are only alternative ways of measuring and assessing the progress of learners.

“It does not necessarily mean that these approaches were developed to prevent cheating,” Briones said.

San Antonio also appealed to parents to “take the lead in fostering the value of honesty” in their children.

Meanwhile, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) slammed the idea of “distance cheating” as it is offending for the learners.

With this, Basilio called on DepEd to consider the pass or fail mechanism.

So sa amin, ‘di siya doable at this time,” he added.—Ma. Angelica Garcia/LDF, GMA News
