Lechon buyers crowd stalls, fail to follow social distancing

Filipinos seeking to buy Lechon at La Loma, Quezon City for New Year on Thursday failed to follow physical distancing measures as they crowded around Lechon stalls.

According to JP Soriano’s report on “24 Oras,” there were just too many buyers.

The prices of some Lechon almost doubled compared to last year amid the high demand.

Lechon vendors said the hike price was due to the series of lockdowns that occurred in the country due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

“‘Yung supply po from the province, lalo na kami po is native, ‘yung supply atsaka po ‘yung sa mga permit doon po tumaas. ‘Yung presyo feeling ko habang gumagabi mas medyo tumataas,” a vendor said.

The lechon de leche in La Loma goes for P7,000, while the medium-sized lechon costs between P8,000 and P10,000.  A large lechon costs at least P12,000.

Despite the increase in prices, Joy Bernal said it was still a blessing. Bernal will later celebrate the New Year as well as her birthday.

“Blessing pa rin kahit na ganon ‘yung mga nangyari sa mundo, diba? Magpapasalamat pa rin tayo,” she said.

Meanwhile, 85-year-old Mila Cesario, the founder of Mila’s Lechon, greeted the customers a happy new year.

“Hindi puwedeng walang lechon. happy new year sa lahat,” she said. -NB, GMA News
