CA OKs appointment of Aimee Ferolino-Ampoloquio as Comelec commissioner
The bicameral Commission on Appointments (CA) on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Aimee Ferolino-Ampoloquio as commissioner at the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Ampoloquio replaces retired commissioner Al Parreño in the position, and will serve until February 2027.
During the CA panel hearing on her ad interim appointment, Ampoloquio expressed confidence that the Comelec will achieve its goal to register 7 million new voters and deactivated voters before the voter registration period ends in September this year, in time for the 2022 elections.
According to her, around 4 million individuals will turn 18 by May 2022, making them eligible for the next elections. Around 2.093 million of this number have already registered.
She added that the Comelec expects 3 million of the deactivated voters will register for the 2022 polls, of which around 300,000 have already done so.
"We intend to register 100% of this target," Ampoloquio said.
All in all, the Comelec is expecting around 58 million voters for the 2022 elections.
Ampoloquio said the Comelec is proposing for a "voter registration month" to encourage more voters to register for the 2022 polls.
She added that more satellite voter registration sites will resume operations once COVID-19 restrictions ease.
"We have 1,488 offices of election officers plus offices of the city election officers. That’s about 1,600 more or less aside from the satellite registrations and mall registration 689 satellite. This number will increase as soon as suspension is lifted," she said.
The 2022 elections are scheduled for May 9 next year. — RSJ, GMA News
