Gov't probes incidents of mass gathering in Manila, Quezon province - Año

Two mass gathering incidents in Manila and Quezon province are under investigation for possible violations of COVID-19 safety protocols, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said Monday.

In his presentation during the weekly Talk to the Nation briefing, Año said the boxing incident held last June 21 at Lakandula Street corner Kagitingan Street in Barangay 38, Zone 2, District 1 in Tondo, Manila is under probe.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government is also investigating Barangay Official Alfredo Garcia in Manila for possible lapses in the incident.

In a previous report, Garcia said he was able to scold the teenagers involved in the scuffle. He added that the children were not residents of the barangay.

Año further disclosed that a mass gathering incident in Barangay Cinco Calauag, Quezon last June 19 will also be investigated for possible violations of health rules.

Barangay Chairman Roderick Lavarro in Quezon province will be probed for the alleged mass gathering.

Duterte previously warned that barangay officials who would allow mass gatherings will face arrest. 

COVID-19 safety measures violators

From the period of June 21 to June 27, Año said 51,012 people were caught not wearing masks.

Of the number, at least 29,904 were warned while 16,778 were fined and 3,493 conducted community service. There were 22 individuals who were subjected for inquest while 815 faced regular filing of complaints.

He also indicated that mass gathering incidents reached 598 during the same period.

Of these, at least 479 were warned while 72 were fined, eight underwent community service, and 39 faced complaints.

Those who violated social distancing measures reached 8,617, with 14,636 warned with 2,016 individuals fined while 399 underwent community service and 1,566 faced regular filing.  -- BAP, GMA News
